Halloween Costumes, Fancy Dress Costume Guide
It is a well known fact that half the fun of going to a Halloween fancy dress costume party – or any party for that matter – is the GETTING READY. It should be important to follow therefore, this 10 step preparation guide before heading off to a party…. and especially necessary in this Halloween silly season!
1. When is the Party?
Decide on how long you have to brainstorm for the perfect fancy dress costume. Do lunch with friends to find out what they will be wearing and to avoid clashes. This will also ensure YOUR fancy dress costume is better than everyone else’s.
2. Where is the Party being held?
Take this into account when deciding on your costume. For example, you wouldn’t wear a Yogi Bear suit to a balmy evening on the Gold Coast. Much like you wouldn’t throw on a skimpy Bunny Girl costume to a Christmas in July party in Melbourne. Or would you…..
3. What costume do I wear?
This is a biggie and obviously depends on what the theme of the party is. For our purposes lets call it a Halloween costume party so you would need to dress accordingly - scary, horrific, gory, disgusting, blood n guts – any of these will do. Research it on the internet and GET IT RIGHT.
4. Practice your Halloween costume
Know how long to it takes to get ready - including makeup, wigs and accessories. Practice how to accentuate your various bits to look scary, sexy or revolting and how to utilise the Halloween costume theme to its fullest.
5. Pre-party gathering
Invite friends also going to the party, to join you for drinks and nibbles and to get ready together at your house. Bear in mind that it is a Halloween fancy dress party and therefore costumes will be extravagant and probably need a lot of prep time. Make sure there is plenty of room on the bathroom bench to balance hair straighteners AND wine glasses without it all sliding into the sink…plastic cups perhaps? Also required is the appropriate ‘dressing up and being silly’ music to set the mood - you wouldn’t play reggae music before going to a Halloween party for example.
6. Keep music, nibbles and DRINKS topped up for maximum effect
Anyone for cocktails? You don’t want to lose that essential pre-party buzz before you even get to the party. Heaven forbid anyone sobers up and puts the bloody telly on!
7. Don’t forget a photo shoot
Before AND AFTER photos are compulsory (and may be required as police evidence the next day!).
Get some taken before everyone’s makeup starts sliding off and people lose wigs, broomsticks .…or whatever Halloween costume props they started with. If you’ve had enough strawberry daiquiri you may like to announce “let’s make a pyramid” and start the party tricks there and then. Suggestion: clear all cocktail glasses and the plasma screen out of the way first.
8. Transport to the Party
Essential if you want to get there….you do don’t you…want to get there?
Book the taxis in advance. Ideally you’d like a friend to drop you all off but in most cases you’ll find your friends are all going to the party too. If its peak season for taxis then it may be a case of Who you know - use your crafty Halloween wit and get your brother in law who is a policeman, to perform his good cop duty and drop you all off in the squad car. Even better he can put the lights on and you can make a grand entrance!

Pour more drinks and …… hic …..there was something else…..
10. Party Time
Party? ….what party? Crank up the music, order pizza and stay right where you are. By then the neighbours will have already joined you so there’s no need to tiptoe around. Have another daiquiri, straighten up your naughty vixen Vampire costume and go have a drunken snog with that hot guy in the Count Dracula costume….WOO HOO!
