A Fairy Costume
A Fairy Costume with Glitter, Fairy Dust & Wings
Once upon a time there was a woman who wore a Fairy costume. She got sick of always waiting at home. Waiting for that man. Always, always…. waiting. But then when he did come home – she still waited. He looked at her but he didn’t see her. He heard her but he never listened to her. There was nothing left…he no longer loved her she was sure. So in her eyes there was no need to keep trying. Her friends all rallied round, as friends do. Such a relief to have them, she thought. They told her of the upcoming fancy dress party and she yearned to go. More than anything she must go to this wonderful party and they would all see her and for once she would shine.
Something they won’t expect me to wear – what would it be? A Fairy costume! She watched as a mother and her tiny daughter, laughing together they danced past her in the street. This delightful child wearing a beautiful, pink, glittery Fairy costume looked happier than anyone she had ever seen in her entire life. She remembered that feeling….from somewhere in her own past, just a brief flickering of something…it was a time long ago. That man? But no, it was gone. The memory erased forever. She suddenly felt exultant with her new revelation instead: as mischievous and as innocent as a child, she too, would wear a Fairy costume and she would be happy again. Happy and… free.
And this would be a glamourous Fairy fancy dress costume. It needed to be sexy. And striking and glorious and make them all see that she was there. That she was back! That man no longer owned her or had power over her. He couldn’t tell her what to wear this time – oh no not ever again. She laughed at herself as she sprinkled even more glitter over the skin of her bare shoulders and smiled proudly at the reflection staring back at her. If only he could see her now. She shuddered but continued on, oblivious to the charade.
Look at me! In a sexy Fairy costume for goodness sake!! So she went to the party with her newfound courage and fluttering fairy sparkling-ness. Wings, wand and a magical shiny crown sat upon her long flowing hair. People flocked to her…they were drawn to the enchantment in her eyes. For once she felt strong and sensual and worthy of being loved. But then there came the rough tug on her glittered arm…. In the bright lights of the party was a dark silhouette she knew only too well. That man! He had come to get her and now he was taking her. Back to the reality of who she really was and to her rightful, dutiful place. Her eyes grew again cold and she was alone and empty. Once again she was nothing. Nobody to anyone.
The Fairy costume lay crumpled in a heap on the floor.
