Halloween Costumes, Halloween Parties, Its Party Time
One of the most fun Halloween Fancy Dress Costume Party nights I have EVER experienced was a function held by a radio station my fiancé Sam and I used to work for. Each year they put on a massive everything-laid-on fancy dress party for all the employees and it was a different costume theme each time. One year it was ‘Gold’…another year it was a ‘P’ party…another one was ‘Hawaii’ and so on. But this year it was the Mystery Famous Couples costume party. A bit like the Secret Santa thing at Christmas where you pull someone’s name out of a hat and you have to get them the gift. Well this was similar, in that you pulled a famous persons name from the hat, but only one half of the famous couple. The idea was that when you arrive at the fancy dress party all dolled up in your character costume; you roamed about til you spotted the person who was your other half.
Clear as mud?
So anyway….I pulled the lovely Morticia out of the proverbial hat which suited me just fine as I felt it matched my mood at the time. It meant my Halloween costume could be long, dark and flowy but more importantly, I got to wear a wig! Sam got Sid Vicious which he seemed chuffed about, and so we each set about gathering ideas and bits for our different costumes. Talk around the station became very secretive in the weeks leading up to party night – nobody was allowed to spill the beans on their costume and if they let slip, then they missed out on AWD’s (after work drinks) for the rest of the week. Oh god no!
The party was held at the lavish Melrose House – where all the best, important people in town had their parties so we couldn’t help but feel special. Drunk, but still special…..compulsory cocktails thrust in our hands as we stepped into the main ballroom, by waitresses in cute little mini-skirted Halloween Witch costumes. From there we all ran about matching ourselves up with our character doubles….there were lots of mad shrieks and ‘oh god its YOU’ once people had found their other halves. I found my missing Gomez – aka Mike the sleazy sales manager, which unfortunately meant a lot of ducking and weaving all night. And Sid, with his stick-on nose piercings and fake swastika tattoos, found his missing Nancy who turned out to be wacky Jacky from marketing.
Bonnie found Clyde, Tarzan found Jane, Caesar found Cleopatra – everyone had gone to a heap of effort and their costumes looked fantastic – the perfect Halloween Fancy Dress Party. There were, however, a couple of costume malfunctions (accidental or otherwise?) but that just added to the night. The Hunchback of Notre Dame, who thought he was waiting on the red hot gypsy Esmeralda, instead ended up WITH A BELL!! That was hilarious, and typical of Jenni from the creative dept. She decided there was no fun in dressing up in ‘some slapper gypsy’ costume – but that a bell costume would get more of a laugh. And it SO did. It was actually an upside-down bell if you can imagine it - with her head as the dinger thing in the middle. My god how we laughed!
But the prize would have to go to poor Blair, one of the new young boys from the promotions dept - fresh out of radio school….. got it completely wrong and instead of a suave, sexy Fred Astaire costume… HE ARRIVED AS FRED FLINTSTONE! It took us a while to work it all out – we had a spare Ginger Rogers floating about looking gorgeous and wandering where her Freddy was and then somebody finally clicked. Blair lost 2 weeks worth of AWD’s after that stuff up and was made to join the Social Committee and help organise next years party. That was possibly begging for a whole pile of trouble but after all, the beauty of having a Mystery Halloween Fancy Dress Costume Party is just that. It’s a mystery!
