Fancy dress costumes should mean one thing – fun!  And that’s fun before you even get to the party.  As my mother used to say growing up whenever we set off for a long road trip – half the fun is in the getting there.  Well, the same can be said for fancy dress costumes… half the fun is in the preparation before the party even begins. 
 
Deciding which of your fancy dress costumes you are going to wear is going to be your first dilemma… and a fairly major one for obvious reasons.  But there’s no need for it to turn into a big deal; no need for panic stations this early on in the piece.  That’s assuming you have left yourself plenty of time to choose something from the massive selection of fancy dress costumes that are around now.  That’s the good thing – fancy dress costumes cover a fantastic variety of themes these days… there’s possibly nothing that somebody hasn’t already thought of as far as unique and clever ideas for fancy dress costumes go.
 
Before you pick from the list of fancy dress costumes however, you need to know the theme for the party.  That’s the basics – it should go without saying.  You wouldn’t wear a sexy schoolgirl costume to a Fairytale theme party, for example.  Just like you wouldn’t wear a cowboy costume to a Space theme party.  Or would you?  Didn’t they have some sort of cowboy character in the latest Star Wars movie?  No, that’s just silly!  Keep to the storyline and do yourself a favour by wearing the appropriate fancy dress costumes to match themes.
 
With fancy dress costumes, it’s important to practise wearing them before you actually go to the party.  Once again – this is obvious but I will spell it out to you in four words:  war drobe mal function.  Ok, so that’s only two words, but I wanted to get your attention (you may have already polished off a few warm-up cocktails by now).  But that’s a good thing - like I said earlier…it’s all about having fun, fun, FUN! 
 
So it’s vital for everyone to practise wearing their fancy dress costumes prior to getting into the taxi, just in case there are issues.  By issues I mean accessory problems… your witches hat doesn’t fit… your fairy wand has snapped… your pirate sword isn’t piratey enough… The list can go on and on.  Better to find these things out before the night of the party though, don’t you think… Are we having fun yet?
